When you hear orthodontics, do you wonder where to start? It's very common for patients to have a number of questions about orthodontics and more specifically braces. Kneib Dentistry knows you're busy and want to help you every step of the way, so, we have put together a list of common questions and answers about orthodontics. From now on, you should never have a question about orthodontics again.

Orthodontics: What you need to know

Regardless if you're a parent seeking information about their child's dental issues or an adult who is seeking dental correction for the first time, these are the most common questions:

  • When should my child have their first orthodontic screening?
  • What should I expect when I come for my first visit?

When should my child have their first orthodontic screening?

Orthodontic timing varies, but the doctor will let you know when it is a good time to begin, depending on numerous factors. The important thing is to make sure your child is seeing a dentist regularly.

What should I expect when I come for my first visit?

When visiting any dentist or orthodontist about orthodontic issues, they should be able to answer these questions:

  • Is there an orthodontic problem, and if so, what is it?
  • What is required to correct the problem?
  • Will any teeth need to be removed?
  • How long will the treatment take to complete?
  • How much will treatment cost?

When the doctor recommends orthodontic treatment, the initial procedure is to take proper records for the doctor to create a treatment plan for the specific conditions of the individual. Typical initial records include diagnostic casts, a cephalometric x-ray, as well as multiple photos. These greatly aid the doctor in formulating an ideal "game plan" for treatment. Not all orthodontic issues are corrected with the typical braces we all are familiar with.

Braces: What you need to know

Braces are the most common method of orthodontic correction. With no surprise, they also have a ton of questions surrounding them. As experienced dentists, we want to ensure you know everything you can about braces so you can have the healthy smile you love and deserve. Below are some of the most common questions we encounter by both parents, children and adults:

Parents/Adults

  • Do you offer financing or accept insurance?
We do provide financing options and we accept several common insurances, however, typically orthodontic treatment is provided throughout at least a year, so the payments can be made monthly.
  • When is it too late to get braces?
It is never too late, however it can be an easier process when a child is transitioning from baby teeth to adult (permanent) teeth.
  • How often will I have appointments with braces?
We typically see orthodontic patients once a month.
  • Can I schedule my child's appointments for after school?
We, at Kneib Dentistry, see patients in evening hours for the convenience of those who are only available after school or work.
  • Can I drop my child off for an appointment?
You can drop off your child for their visit, however we do recommend a parent be present just in case there is any important information to discuss.
  • Will my child be able to return to school the same day he/she receives braces?
Yes, there shouldn't be any issues.
  • Do I still need to visit the dentist while in braces?
Yes, a monthly visit is typical to monitor the movement of teeth and make proper adjustments.
  • What type of information/documentation should I have prepared before our first visit?
Nothing should be needed from you other than yourselves.

Children

  • Do braces hurt?
With modern technology and the evolution of braces, extremely light forces can now be applied to patients' teeth, causing virtually no discomfort.
  • Can I still play sports with braces?
Yes, but a mouth guard is highly recommended.
  • Are there foods I can't eat with braces?
There are certain foods that are recommended to not be eaten. You will be provided a list of those consumables.
  • How often should I brush my teeth with braces?
It is recommended that you brush just as often as you would without braces, however it can be more difficult to clean properly. The addition of a Waterpik can aid you in getting those hard-to-reach areas that brushing may not achieve properly. Of course you still want to continue using traditional floss as well.
